When you organize and host a networking event, you’re aiming to become regarded as a forerunner in the business community. Here are some tips on how to host an effective, engaging and entertaining networking event:

  • Hold your gathering in a venue with the right amount of space. It should be small enough to be conducive for socializing but should also be spacious enough to move around.
  • Don’t distract from the purpose of the event – networking – by dominating the event with speeches or presentations.
  • Encourage all your guests to bring information on their products or services. Have tables set aside to display their offerings.
  • Meet everyone, (well at least give it a red-hot try). Make sure you introduce yourself to every person who attends. Welcome them, and focus on talking about what they do, not what you do. Be a great listener, and take a genuine interest in them and their business. They’ll remember you for it.
  • As you meet and greet everyone, constantly look for opportunities to connect people who would benefit from meeting each other. Tell the freelance writer she just has to meet the magazine publisher who just arrived. Keep track of these connections, and follow up next time you see them. Find out if they benefitted from the introduction.
  • There are always a few people at any event who are off in a corner, not talking to anyone. Designate some of your staff members to be anchors for your event. Their job is to make sure everyone is talking with someone. They should be great connectors as well and have the ability to listen and take an interest in others.
  • Have just a few chairs available to keep people moving and mingling.
  • Conduct at least one short networking exercise. For example, have each guest meet three people he or she hasn’t met before or ask guests to find someone in a similar line of business..
  • At the end of the event, spend no more than 10 minutes making announcements and giving door prizes.
